Open any list of display ad sizes and it is overwhelming. The good news: a small group of formats does most of the work, and modern tools let you adapt a single design to the rest. Start with the shapes that matter and the long tail takes care of itself.
The sizes that earn their keep
A few formats consistently get the most inventory and attention:
- Medium rectangle (300 x 250) - the workhorse, slots into article bodies and sidebars.
- Leaderboard (728 x 90) - the wide banner across the top of desktop pages.
- Mobile banner (320 x 50) - small but everywhere, since most browsing is mobile.
- Skyscraper (160 x 600) - the tall sidebar unit that gives you room to breathe.
Cover those four and you are reaching the majority of standard display placements.
Do not forget vertical
Story and full-screen vertical formats (think 1080 x 1920) keep growing as social and mobile placements expand. A vertical version of your creative is no longer optional - it is often where the most engaged attention is.
Design the core, adapt the rest
The mistake is rebuilding the same ad from scratch in every size. Instead, design one strong version, then resize it - letting the layout re-flow so text and product stay balanced in each shape. One source of truth means a change happens once and updates everywhere.
A simple starting set
If you are launching something, make the medium rectangle, leaderboard, mobile banner and one vertical story first. Get those looking great, generate the rest from them, and you have a full, consistent set without the busywork.
